Rays of Light Potholder / Trivet / Coaster

This is a very versatile and simple pattern. You can make a trivet if you use normal hook and yarn, you can make a small rug if you use a hook as thick as your thumb (like the one and only Yokoo) and a yarn thick enough to tie your horse. Yeehaw, click to check it!


Skill Level: Easy - Intermediate

Size: The finished size 18 cm (7") diameter.

Materials: 5 mm (US H-8) hook, Aran Weight yarn 1 ball is 50 gr = approx 50 m (55 yd), scissors, yarn needle.

Gauge: Size 6 (US J-10) mm hook: 12 sc and10 sc rows = 4 inch

Stitches Used: Chain (ch), slip stitch (slst), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), extended double crochet (edc).

Note: If you want to make a coaster you can use a 3 mm crochet hook and Sport Weight / Light DK. Or you can make a rug using T-yarn.



Instruction

Center ring:(with grey) ch4, sl st into first chain to create a ring or you can do a magic ring.

Rnd 1: ch 3 (counts as first edc), work 14 edc in ring. Join the end ofthe round with a sl st in the ch 3. (15 edc)

Rnd 2: (with black) ch 3 (counts as sc + ch1), *1 sc in next edc, ch1*Repeat from * to * around. sl st in the ch3 space to join the end. (15 sc + 15ch1-space)

Rnd 3:(with grey) ch2 (counts as first sc),sc in same space, ch 1, *2 sc in nextch1-space, ch 1* Repeat from * to * around. sl st in the ch2 to join the end.(15 ch1-space)

Rnd 4: (with black) ch 3 (counts as first edc), 2 edc same space, *3 edc in next ch1-space* Repeat from *to* around. Join the sl st top of ch3. (45 edc)



Rnd 5:(with grey) ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc in same edc, ch 1, skip next edc, *2 dc in next edc, ch 1, skip next edc* Repeat from *to* around. Join the end of the round.

Rnd 6: (with black) ch 2 (counts as first sc) in first edc and sc in next edc, edc in next skipped edc stitch from Rnd 5, *sc in next 2 edc, edc in next skipped edc stitch from Rnd 5* Repeat from *to* around. Join the end of the round. Like in the pictures below.



Rnd 7:(with grey) edc in each stitch around, join the end of the round.


To make the hanging loop, ch 7, skip 2 edc,sl st in next edc to join, forming a loop.



Fasten off and weave in loose ends with the yarn needle.
